During this particular ringing session, quite a few odd looking stonechats were trapped. This one looked quite suspicious, especially its dark underwing coverts and rather palish rump. To exclude/confirm the possibility that this is a S. stejnegeri we performed a DNA analysis (we sequenced the mitochondrial ND2 gene as in Zink et al. 2009 ). The results suggested, this is indeed a S. rubicola but its sequence clustered with sequences of stonechats breeding in the Black Sea region, the very far east of the range of this species. It comes into contact with the Siberian Stonechat (S. maurus) there. One more piece of the puzzle where the migratory stonechats during autumn come from?

This individual was quite heavily infested with feather mice whih feed on the keratinous material of the feathers itself. You can see them on the remiges, best on the photo of the wing from below.
